Jekyll
The story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, written by Robert Louis Stevenson in the late 19th century, has long been a classic tale of good versus evil. In the story, Dr. Jekyll is a well-respected scientist who becomes fascinated with the idea of separating his good and evil sides, and creates a potion that allows him to transform into the monstrous Mr. Hyde. At first, Mr. Hyde seems to represent pure evil, committing heinous crimes and causing destruction wherever he goes. However, upon closer examination, it becomes clear that there is a good side to Mr. Hyde as well.
One of the most obvious ways in which the good side of Mr. Hyde becomes evident is through his actions towards those he cares about. Despite his monstrous appearance and behavior, Mr. Hyde is fiercely loyal to Dr. Jekyll and is willing to do whatever it takes to protect him. When Dr. Jekyll's butler, Poole, becomes suspicious of Mr. Hyde's involvement in the doctor's disappearance, Mr. Hyde goes to great lengths to reassure him that everything is fine and to keep him from discovering the truth. This loyalty and concern for others shows that Mr. Hyde is not entirely evil, and that he is capable of caring for others in a selfless way.
Another way in which the good side of Mr. Hyde becomes evident is through his sense of responsibility. Despite his lack of social graces and tendency towards violence, Mr. Hyde takes it upon himself to clean up the messes he creates and to make amends for his wrongdoings. After killing Sir Danvers Carew, Mr. Hyde recognizes that he has done something wrong and decides to leave a note confessing to the crime and apologizing for his actions. This demonstrates a sense of remorse and a desire to make things right, which are traits typically associated with goodness.
Finally, the good side of Mr. Hyde becomes evident through his willingness to accept the consequences of his actions. When Dr. Jekyll finally decides to stop taking the potion and become Mr. Hyde permanently, he knows that he will likely be punished for his crimes. Rather than running away or trying to escape, he willingly turns himself in and takes responsibility for his actions. This shows a level of integrity and bravery that is not often seen in those who are purely evil.
Overall, while Mr. Hyde may seem like a purely evil character at first glance, a closer examination reveals that he has a good side as well. His loyalty to those he cares about, his sense of responsibility, and his willingness to accept the consequences of his actions all demonstrate that there is more to him than just his monstrous appearance and behavior. Mr. Hyde may not be a completely good person, but he is not completely evil either, and this complexity adds depth and nuance to the character and the story as a whole.
