In "The Ultimate Gift," chapter 1 introduces us to the main character, Red Stevens. Red is a wealthy, successful businessman who has spent his entire life amassing his fortune and climbing the corporate ladder. Despite his material success, Red is unhappy and unfulfilled, feeling as though he has missed out on the things that truly matter in life.
The chapter opens with Red receiving a visit from his lawyer, Mr. Hamilton. Mr. Hamilton tells Red that he has been named the beneficiary of a large trust fund by his grandfather, who has recently passed away. Red is intrigued by this news and agrees to meet with Mr. Hamilton to discuss the details of the trust.
As the two men sit down to talk, Mr. Hamilton explains that the trust fund is not just a simple financial gift. Instead, it is a series of challenges designed to teach Red the value of hard work, compassion, and appreciation for the things in life that truly matter.
The first challenge is for Red to spend one month living on a farm and working for his keep. Red is reluctant to accept this challenge, feeling that he is above manual labor and that he has no interest in living on a farm. However, Mr. Hamilton insists that this is the only way for Red to fully understand and appreciate the gift his grandfather has left him.
As the chapter ends, Red is left to ponder the meaning of this strange and unexpected challenge. He is not sure if he is ready to leave behind his comfortable life and the many luxuries he has become accustomed to. However, he knows that he must at least give this challenge a try, in the hope that it will help him discover the ultimate gift his grandfather has left him.
