This is not a bad book, but not one for me. Mami admires the airplane stewardesses and suggests that Negi might want to be a stewardess one day and travel the world for free. Most of the vendors in the market are Jewish too, though they speak Spanish. When Tata sees Francisco, she starts insulting him. I could taste the pasteles and hear the bickering of her parents. Her father is a hardworking man, who spends hours of his day outside the home. Titi Generosa comes to stay with the children, and Negi's siblings torment her.

That Don Julio is a "friend" rather than a husband or a boyfriend suggests that familial relationships can take different labels in New York. The book is by no means a bad book. By the time she graduated, she was the oldest of 11 children. She decides that they'll save the groceries for when they're especially hungry or short on food. One Sunday, Mami dresses Negi up and Papi takes her to Abuela's house to spend a week. This book had me laughing out loud, and it made me think deeply. Raymond's foot refuses to heal, and Mami vows to find him a specialist.
The experience is terrifying and Negi scrubs herself afterwards. Negi has an idea of what American culture means thanks to the experts, but what she's seen is enough to impress upon her that American culture and Puerto Rican cultures are very different. He stared at me, pulled his glasses down from his forehead, looked at the papers inside the folder with my name on it, and glared. He smells of beer. They do the same thing the next day and buy Negi school clothes and a coat. My favorite part of the book is when Esmeralda plays in the wood when her father is building the house in Puerto Rico and she gets termites all over her. When Negi screams back, she asserts her independence and insists on identifying very strongly with her Puerto Rican identity, albeit through a childish tantrum.
One example is how the Lord's Prayer is described. Tata begins drinking wine or beer early in the day, though she still cooks supper and makes the children eat. It would have been nice to have some back story on her parents and their relationship, but she may not have had that information. After two months, Mami and Negi move to a larger apartment so the rest of Negi's siblings can come. Negi panics when she tries to use this toilet and Mami and Doña Andrea, the woman they're staying with, laugh at Negi. She longed for her father, to grow up, to be alone, to be with her family, to go back to Puerto Rico, to get out of Brooklyn. Negi is also symbolically independent now, though she's definitely still dependent on Mami and Tata for practical matters.

It was obviously an option for One Book, One New York for a reason. One day, Mami moves Negi and her siblings to Santurce, a suburb of San Juan. I am grateful to be part of such a rich culture that's filled with delicious foods, exotic fruits, romantic music and dances, and an array of diverse people. The matron grabs Negi, forces her out the door, and says she needs to tell Mami what happened. The book was first published in September 20th 1993 and the latest edition of the book was published in February 28th 2006 which eliminates all the known issues and printing errors. I despised the celebrated House on Mango Street by Cisneros for instance. Later that week, the community center offers a new breakfast food: a glass full of peanut butter and hot milk.
By the end of the book, Esmeralda has 11 siblings and her mom is single. Negi's mother travels to New York to see a specialist about Raymond's foot. Back and forth from the rural Macun to the city and back again to the humble country life, which contains a purity that she cannot recapture elsewhere. I love immigrant stories and this was very inspirational. The author reads her own audiobook. Mami is becoming more independent and self-sufficient.
