It is certainly a character on its own, consisting of 2 large towns and 6 small ones, each with a character of its own. It means: the setting is supposed to come to life—to be rich, vibrant, catalytic. We want to help you with that, too. There is no feeling in the world like waking up and seeing that someone somewhere was purchasing your book while you were fast asleep. It was a dirty, dingy, dying steel town, like several in the valleys surrounding Pittsburgh — but for me, it was home. Just as the setting as a whole does to the story proper.
