Bing was born and raised in South Central LA, and her firsthand experiences with gang violence, poverty, and systemic racism have shaped her worldview and fueled her passion for activism. In "Do or Die," Bing tells the stories of the people she grew up with and the struggles they faced on a daily basis. She also writes about her own journey of self-discovery and the challenges she faced as a young woman of color trying to make a difference in her community.

She writes with empathy and understanding, offering a nuanced and complex portrayal of life in South Central LA. Through her writing, Bing challenges readers to think beyond stereotypes and see the humanity in everyone, no matter how difficult their circumstances may be.

The text comes off as a series of semi-connected vignettes looking into the specific circumstances of several youth gang members, and the efforts of a few corrections officials attempting to stem the rampant violence. And I used to be homeless, so the idea of having all those thousands of books at your fingertips, it's kind of enticing I have to say. And for guys it seemed it was worse, at least from my perspective, because somehow that mental health aspect was tied into your masculinity and you were looked at as less of a man somehow if you had any types of problems like depression or anxiety. The thing I liked about this book is all the conflict it has. . Welcome to a world where teenagers wear colostomy bags and have scrapbooks filled with funeral invitations; where a young man, after being shot in the chest, drives himself to the hospital; where another youngster, caught in crossfire, uses his girlfriend as a human shield; where teenage gangsters are kidnapped, tortured, and held for six-figure ransoms; where kids hum the latest movie's theme music while killing people.

It's a world of clickheads, sherms, bangers, ballers, and mummyheads; a world where the strongest feelings of family come from other gang members; a world where the most potent feelings of self-worth come from murder. And you either take it so seriously that you become an idiot, or you do it as a very well paying job that is a job nonetheless, and you thank God that you were given the tools, the looks, so you could do it. I really don't think this country has remained entirely that naive. Sadly, this book is an inadequate representation into the gravity of gangs in America.

I read this book a while back and found it very interesting, as someone else commented, it's one of those books that never grows old, I go back to it often. This is a good read. Like there's a certain part of a wall I touch every time when I walk by. The synopsis of this is that a young journalist lady who used to be a model put herself behind enemy lines to find out about youth gang warfare. One imagines standing in line at the DMV with a Kindle, it's so much easier. But, money is the siren call for that. I have to touch the same part of the same wall while I'm walking my dog.
