These false beliefs prove detrimental to both the protagonist and the nations he represents. Gallimard divorces his wife and supports Song and who he believes to be their son for the next fifteen years in Paris. He describes his monotonous daily routine, and then confides that he is no ordinary prisoner, but a celebrity. Gallimard, however, is completely blinded by his infatuation with Song's submissive Oriental mystique, and in Act Two, Song joins him in France. Humiliated, Gallimard visits Song for the first time in three weeks. He puts on make-up, a wig, and a kimono, and rechristens himself Madame Butterfly.
On his next visit to Song, he demands to see her naked. The flat the couple shared was confiscated. Gallimard has secured this flat for Song, and he visits Song, his Butterfly, a few times each week. Gallimard continues his role as narrator as well as acting the role of his former self.
