Due to his parents' difficult financial situation, he got into the school through a scholarship. I absolutely adored this entire series and it kept on reminding me of stories I heard by accident of my dad in boarding school raiding the school pantry and trying to give each other home-made tattoos with everyone ending up with only a black dot cos it was too sore. I will never hear the word Malawi without remembering Garlic and Lake Malawi again. John van de Ruit makes Spud work by purposely including small details of everyday teenage life in order to form a connection with the reader, never losing them in stereotypical, fictional drama of teenage life. Befriends Spud, mostly due to his interest in literature, and his sharing a name with John Milton, one of his favourite poets. Like all the previous 'Spud' books, Learning to fly not only constantly remains funny but also surpasses all of them in every terms.

The books are written in the form of the diary of John "Spud" Milton and really capture the atmosphere in this country at the time 1989 - 1993 as well as what school life was like for boys in a private boarding school. I love how from the first book the writing didn't have much literature, big word or complex sentences because he was only 13. Considers Spud to be his friend, as he often includes him in hunting trips and forces him to hike with him a lot of the time. She's going to learn how to ride a real, live horse at last. After the social, she continues to stalk him through many letters and telephone calls, which he ignores, having been freaked out by her mildly disturbing personality and perverse sense of humour. Spud returns to do his final year of school, and you can see the immediate pressure he's under.

Amazingly funny, and by far the best in the series! John Milton, 13, a scholarship student at an elite boys' boarding school in South Africa, records his disturbing but often hilarious exploits in this diary-style first novel set in 1990. They go on mischievous adventures and daring pranks, and often create trouble and get into trouble. My dream is to find another book like Spud. Spud is the author's own loyal companion on his property in northern New South Wales and was the inspiration for the story. A couple of weeks later pup escaped from his kennel and visited Spud. .

Of course I find it almost impossible to read a series out of order, so I had to start with the first book of the series. I'm very keen to read the rest of the series. At the end of his third year, he becomes Head of House which many of the others had deliberately avoided due to the responsibilities required. I have visited the school In KwaZulu Natal and thanks to brilliant writing by the author, I have "seen" the story before my eyes while driving around there. We usually have to trudge through a political mess of meaning if we want to read a local author. The way that Ruit sends Spud through twists and turns in his boarding school life makes the reader surprised of his success. I disliked the Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging because it was all centred on the protagonist, but this book was all-rounded.
