The American Health Care Act (AHCA) is a proposed replacement for the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare. The AHCA was introduced in the United States House of Representatives in March 2017, but ultimately did not become law.
The AHCA aimed to repeal and replace many key provisions of the ACA, including the individual mandate (which required individuals to have health insurance or pay a penalty), the employer mandate (which required large employers to offer health insurance to their employees), and the expansion of Medicaid (which provided insurance coverage to low-income individuals and families).
One of the main goals of the AHCA was to reduce the cost of health insurance for individuals and families. To achieve this, the AHCA proposed a number of changes, such as:
- Allowing insurance companies to charge higher premiums to people with pre-existing conditions, or to exclude coverage for certain pre-existing conditions altogether.
- Eliminating subsidies that helped people with lower incomes afford health insurance.
- Replacing the ACA's system of income-based subsidies with age-based tax credits, which would have been less generous to many people.
In addition to these changes, the AHCA would have also:
- Cut funding for Medicaid, which provides insurance coverage to low-income individuals and families.
- Repealed a number of taxes that were implemented under the ACA to help fund the expansion of healthcare coverage.
The AHCA faced significant opposition from many healthcare advocacy groups and was ultimately not passed by Congress. However, the ACA remains the law of the land and continues to provide healthcare coverage to millions of Americans.
